                                      Buffer Storage

Definition : It is a system used to temporarily store the items that are needed for production and finished products that are ready to transfer to storage.

Reasons for using Buffer Storage :  Advantages

  • It is common to include the buffer storage for production flow lines.
  • The main principal reason for the use of buffer storage is to reduce the effect of individual station breakdowns on the line operations.
  • By using buffer storage the production line continues to run smoothly.
  • This reduce the blocking and starving of the workstation.
  • Improves the efficiency.

Disadvantages :

  • By using the Buffer Storage  it increase the factory floor space.
  • Requires more material handling equipment.
  • High in process inventory.

Common reasons for Stoppages :

  • Tool failures or tool adjustments at individual processing stations and scheduled tool changes.
  • Defective work parts or components at assembly stations.
  • Electrical malfunction or short circuit.
  • Mechanical failure of transfer systems.
